NAPLES ITALY – We passed through Naples from Capri on our way back to New York. This place always leaves me feeling melancholy: The good and bad of Italy are focused here with a tilt toward the later.

CAPRI ITALY – We took a long grueling hike today from the piazza in Anacapri up the spine of this island to its far end at Il Faro, where we had a sensational lunch and spent the balance of the day.

CAPRI ITALY – We spent the better part of the day at the “beach” at Da Luigi at the Faraglioni, the much photographed rocks sticking out of the sea here. t put beach in quotes because there is actually not a sandy breach anywhere on Capri. People lay out on rocks (or rent lounges at a cost similar to a daily car rental) to feed their pre-melanomas, and climb down steps to swim. Strange, these Italians.

CAPRI ITALY – After a full day of travel from Milan we arrived here for Le Converationi, a literary festival organized by our friends Antonio Monda and Davide Azzolini. This is really, really fun, but visually Capri doesn’t change much from year to year and we’ve been here at least a dozen times so it risks being a bit stale on the photo a day front. We’ll be struggling a bit.

MILAN ITALY – Five images from Milan, celebrating our last day here before we decamp for Naples and Capri. Two of today’s images are a continuation of a theme from three days ago: Casa Rustici; the rest are building facades.

MILAN – Our last day here. I had a shopping day with Maria and this evening we saw Un Ballo in Maschera  at La Scala with Marcelo Álvarez singing Riccardo and his wife, Sondra Radvanovsky, singing Amelia. It was a fabulous evening. Alvarez is a star and Radvanovsky is a superstar; the La Scala crowd was cool to Alvarez and accepting of Radvanovsky (who’s an American who grew up in the Midwest) but booed the young conductor, who according to our host was not up to La Scalla level work. This is one tough crowd. Here’s Maria in our box.
