NEW YORK NEW YORK – Cold and clear today. Icy. Here’s the Union Club on Park Avenue and steam venting into the very cold air. I didn’t recognize this image in my first pass editing the day’s work. I came back to it in desperation, but it came out quite well. It’s the image that I was looking for shooting steam vents.

Taken with my Leica Monochrom and 50mm Summilux.

This is my 1,567th day of my daily photo blog.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – We saw an apartment in Chelsea this morning that Francesca is interested in. Then I walked to the office. My Fitbit objective is 14,000 steps a day which I can achieve if I walk, rather than take a taxi or subway. Walking also provides photo opportunities. So here we are with the Empire State Building and Citicorp Center reflected in the Lipstick Building. Both caught in good light with my Leica Monochrom and 75mm Asph. Summicron. Several frames (many frames in the case of the Lipstick Building) stitched.

Day 1,566 of one photograph a day for the rest of my life.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I went out today with a 1939 Carl Zeiss Jena 85mm F2.0 lens. This lens had a fabulous reputation back then. I managed to fit it onto my Sony Alpha 7 using no fewer than thee adapter (Zeiss rangefinder to Leica screw mount; Leica screw mount to Leica M, and Leica M to Sony E mount). It actually works and stopped down to f11 the lens is as sharp as a modern lens. Wide open it has lovely “bokeh”. The qualities are illustrated in the two images below which don’t have much merit otherwise.

On this day four years ago: Mustique. On this particular day I’ve been in the Caribbean in each of the past four years. As a photographer I struggle with the tropics. There’s not much of of visual interest in Paradise. So I’ve reached back four years for a rainy day in Mustique.

WARREN CONNECTICUT – It’s literally too cold to go out. So I collected a couple of candidates for shot of the day from around the house, taking breaks from sitting in front of a fire and reading. Here’s a plate on a wall in the kitchen. It’s from New Mexico, from the Acoma Pueblo which produces brilliant art. Taken with my Sony Alpha 7 and a Leica Summicron lens.

WARREN CONNECTICUT – Forgive me. I went out on snowshoes to photograph today but it was cold. Really cold. My fingers were sufficiently cold despite my gloves that I couldn’t really operate Leica Monochrom. I came back after 20 minutes or so and only got a few images. Here we go with two frames stitched.

UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 414 – Travel days are hard for me as a daily photo blog guy. My gear is compacted into travel order so I do a lot with my iPhone. Here’s a surprise: there were major God-rays as we climbed out over the Central Valley from San Francisco.

This is day 1,562 in an unbroken string on my daily photo blog.

SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA – I drove back here early – the sky was poor for landscape so I decided to spend the day walking San Francisco. Here is a mini-gallery of images with my Leica Monochrom and 50mm standard lens. Sorry about the number of images. Editing is difficult without the passage of a bit more time, which provides perspective. Many of the images are stitches; the first is actually composed of 10 separate exposures.

I lived in San Francisco for a year back in the day. It’s changed surprisingly little. South of Market has gentrified a bit but the tenderloin has moved north to the area behind the St. Francis Hotel and appears to be more robust than ever.

Day 1,561 in an unbroken string of at least one photo every day.
