WARREN and NEW HAVEN CONNECTICUT – A long day. I started in Warren where I caught our dining room draped for repainting the ceiling. Mid-day I drove down to New Haven to join my college reunion in progress.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I took exactly one picture today. Actually three frames that I stitched in Photoshop (i use stitching as a zoom lens). It’s an alley – I have an ongoing thread in progress on alleys and this was a good one so I knew that I had my image for today.

What interests me about this is the fact that the vines are invading this very dark passageway – they just don’t seem to give up even under hostile circumstances. The image suggests exploring the relationship between that natural and man-made environments in cities. I have a fair number of images that are consistent with this theme, and I’ll be working on it going forward.

WARREN CONNECTICUT – Another day with the Noctilux. I’m shooting a bit wider with it today, taking multiple images and sticking. The lens has a lot of vignetting at f.95. This isn’t a flaw – it results from the laws of physics applied to very fast lenses. Before stitching I correct for the vignetting and then add it back after stitching.

On this day five years ago (day 591): Field photographed with a digital Hasselblad. It was made from nine separate images that were focus stacked. I subsequently gave up medium format in favor of my Leica Monochrom because the Monochrom makes black and white images at least as good as medium format (although I haven’t compared it to the current crop of 100 meg cameras), and I prefer the Leica’s rangefinder viewing and its form factor. The original was in color and drab (wildflowers are a bit subtle sometimes); the conversion to black and white below is more successful.
