WARREN CONNECTUCUT – I spent a good part of the day here shooting with my Leica Q. It’s a lovely little camera with a 24x36mm sensor and a fixed Leica 28mm f1.7 lens. This is probably Leica’s best 28mm, which provides the rationale for using this camera. The camera is compact and very, very fast. I’ve been experimenting with it using HDR technology – taking three frames and combining them to achieve extended dynamic range – then of course translating into black and white. The camera pops off three frames is a half second or so so it’s possible to do HDR hand held. I usually don’t like HDR images, so this really is an experiment. Here you ro

NEW YORK NEW YORK – Not a lot going on today because I’m housebound on some work projects. So . . . I put a macro adapter between my Luxochron and Monochrom and spent an hour getting close to things. It’s impossible to fail with this combination because the out-of focus character of this lens (actually a 50 mm Summicron Asp – it’s just called a Luxochron by me) is so remarkably creamy. This is the case both in front of and behind the focus plane, which is unusual.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I experimented today with focus stacking, a technique that involves taking multiple images with various focus points and combining them with specialized software. It’s most often used in macro photography to overcome the inherent thin depth of focus at close distances. From time to time I use it in landscape (urban and otherwise), pushing the tool for other than its intended use. Today it successfully produced a street art background and a Sycamore foreground, both nicely in focus. Handheld with my Leica Monochrom and Luxocrhon lens.
