JODHPUR INDIA – We made our way here from Mumbai by air – always an adventure in India, not because of the flying but because of the red tape on the ground departing. Jodhpur is lovely. We’re staying at one of the world’s great hotels, the Umaid Bhawan Palace. More on that tomorrow. This is the heart of what has historically been a desert region, but which as been merely arid for the past decade because of climate change.

MUMBAI INDIA – We had a day of touring with a so-so guide – one of our few disappointments on this trip. We visited a large, mostly outdoor laundry complex, there laundry is gathered, washed by hand, and returned to the owners under a system much like the one dramatized in the movie “Lunchbox”. Amazing actually. We also visited the Anglican St. Thomas Cathedral which is an ok example of Colonial architecture, but has a remarkable collection of memorials for those who gave their lives in the service of the East India Company and the the Raj. Pictures from both spots below.

BOMBAY INDIA – This port city got the name Bombay from the Portuguese who called it Bombain or good bay. It was acquired by the English as part of Catherine of Breganza’s dowery whEN she married Charles II. It’s huge and densely populated and the center of everything but the government in India. We had a day of travel so my best image for the day turned out to be a flower arrangement that I snapped in our hotel.

NEAR UDAIPUR INDIA – Still at the Leopard camp. We’ve seen a few leopards but not close enough to photograph (we really didn’t expect to capture any images of them because we didn’t come equipped to shoot wildlife). The scenery here is sensational; this semi-arid area reminds me of Southern Utah, but built in granite rather than sandstone.

On this day last year (day 1,565): Old lens. I spent this day last year exploring the capabilities of an 85mm Carl Zeiss lens from 1939 – one of a number of vintage lenses that I shoot on my Leica Monochrom. Not a very interesting picture.
