MILAN ITALY – Well here we are on July 4 and no Independence Day celebration. This seems odd – we were on Capri at this time last year and there is always a big 4th of July celebration there. Oh well . . .

More Milan Tourism. This one is from a triumphal arch built in honor of Vittorio Emanuele II and Napoleon. Milan was briefly under French rule during the Napoleonic era. By the way I borrowed friend’s Leica 18mm lens today and shot with it extensively. Unfortunately it’s outstanding. Distortion free. Amazing detail. Very flair resistant. Not a trace of purple fringing. I’m going to need one of these. Also shot film, which I’ll post later.

An odd entrance to a courtyard. I guy came up and asked me in Italian if I know what it is, but I was clueless.

The Basilica di S. Ambrogio from the 10th (!) century – the site has been a Christian Church since Roman times. A lovely, simple red brick structure. those guys knew how to build. I took a lot of details on film.

Finally some graffiti. This 18mm lens rocks.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – As you may have noted I’ve been working a lot recently with my new Leica Noctilux lens. It’s large and expensive but shooting at f.95 it has a unique look and character. I use a three stop neutral density filter (.9) in daylight, which permits wide open shooting. Without the filter it can effectively see in the dark – very cool for events and street at night handheld with no flash. Stopped down past f2.8 or so it has a character very similar to the Leica 50mm Summilux, which is very good character indeed. I’m looking at this lens as an experiment, but with no economic downside – Noctis are back-ordered by a year or more, are highly in demand, and I could sell it for substantially more than I paid for it (which was several times the cost of my first car). It’s the third version of the Nocti made by Leica – I’ve owned all three. I sold version 2 several years ago because of difficulty focusing it.

I’ve been shooting it on my Sony Nex-7 but have found that the Sony contrast detection focusing system isn’t up to the task of dealing with the skinny depth of field of an f.95 lens. In actual use roughly half of my images with the Nex-7 and Nocti have focus issues. Disappointing. So I’m now using it on my Leica M9. I’m astigmatic in my shooting eye, which makes the Leica rangefinder difficult to use in poor light. The solution is to switch shooting eyes. Not ideal but it works – shooting wrong-eyed with my M9 roughly 90% of my images are keepers from a focus standpoint. I’s also a relief to use it on a camera with a “full frame” sensor, with no focal length multiplier, so the lens can fill the focal length niche that it was designed for. Anyway a couple of images with the Nocti.

GASPARILLA ISLAND FLORIDA – I spent the afternoon looking for non-beach, non-bird, non-sunrise, non-sunset images on this barrier island on the west coast of Florida. As noted in a previous post I’m packing my Sony Nex-7 and a variety of Leica lenses. Today I stuck with the 24mm Summilux, which is roughly the equivalent to a 35mm on the Nex-7 – a good all around focal length. This island is a colorful place so I’ve indulged my typical lack of editorial discipline and included three images:

WASHINGTON CONNECTICUT – I went out with my Alpa Max today to add to my collection of Litchfield County churches. In reviewing my progress to day I realized that I hadn’t yet taken a full frontal image of the iconic Washington Congregational Church with high res medium format gear. I wasn’t satisfied with the image that I captured so I’m not showing it today – I’ll have to go back to try again – but I caught this as a set up the tripod and did a test image to assure that all was in order.

TORRINGTON CONNECTICUT – Back to Torrington for the Center Congregational Church. This is an oddity – the only stone Gothic revival Congregational Church that I’ve seen I’m my travels in this part of the state. Here it is. Two frames taken with my Alpa Max and cropped to fit the form factor of the church. Torrington by the way was the birthplace of John Brown, the radical abolutionist who merits a line in the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

TORRINGTON CONNECTICUT – This afternoon I drove to this former mill town on the Naugatuck River to photograph churches. The light was right to collect two of the large Catholic Churches in town, St. Peter Church and St. Francis Assisi Church. The light was wrong for the Central Congregational Church – I’ll be back tomorrow morning for it. The large Episcopal Church, Trinity Church, is very tight to a narrow street and accordingly very hard to photograph. Anyway here are St. Peter and St. Francis Assisi, taken with my Alpa Max and an 80 meg Phase One back. These subjects require full use of the camera’s rise and shift features. The St. Francis Assis (the second image) is two frames stitched.

NORTHVILLE CONNECTICUT – Back to Connecticut at last. No hurricane. No blizzard. No problems. A rare relief.

I had a chance to explore a de-commissioned church that I’ve seen many times from a distance in gentle, late afternoon light. This is two exposures with my Alpa Max, stitched in Photoshop. Whatever information there may have been about this structure appears to be lost, at least on the web.
