NEW YORK NEW YORK – We’re rushing around preparing for a trip to Paris for a long Easter weekend. Not much time for photography so I shot a vase and flowers at home with my Noctilux f.95 lens, which has a distinctive signature when shot wide open. Here you go.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – From a visual standpoint the recent run of savage weather here has created a real winter playground, but I’m getting tired of it. Call it windchill fatigue. I tried to shake things up today by digging out my superwide 15mm Carl Zeiss superlens. It’s ok but doesn’t do much to hide my disgust with my surroundings.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – It’s so bitterly cold today that I didn’t venture out of our apartment. I worked from home and shot around the house. I keep an inventory of these in the back of my mind for shut-in days, and wait for interesting light and shadows. The vase is from Spin in Shanghai – this is not the first time that I’ve photographed it.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I’ve had an iPhone 6S for a month or so – I bought it because of the improved camera but really haven’t used it much. This morning I shot around the house with an updated version of ProCamera, a camera app, to get to know it a bit better. It does a marvelous job; the app has a very good implementation of HDR, which helps solve many exposure problems. Here are some samples.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I got a bit desperate today and ended up shooting the alley behind our building here in the dark.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – Another day shooting with my f.95 Noctilux lens. I’m using this lens mostly in daylight, so I keep a neutral density filter on it (in effect sunglasses) so I can shoot it wide open, which provides its special look. Today I did a still life at home with mirrors, one my favorites of this sort of thing in the past five years. I also shot a detail from our building, and a “lone person” in midtown.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – A heavy package arrived from Leica today. It was my 50mm Leica Noctilux f.95 lens back from repairs. This is a major object. The f.95 isn’t a typo – it’s the fastest 35mm format lens ever. It’s a beast – heavy and it blocks the lower left-hand portion of the viewfinder, so as I’ve reviewed images taken with it there are occasional surprises. This lens renders magically wide open, but is very demanding in terms of focus. Perfect images take a lot of practice. Stopped down it performs similarly to the widely-acclaimed Leica 50mm f1.4 Summilux. This is one of the reasons why I go through the expense and bother of owning Leica. I’ll be keeping this lens on my camera for the next week.

I’ve gotten rusty with this thing since the repairs have taken four months. I shot around home with it at f.95 practicing focus and seeing whether it really can work magic with every day objects. Here you go:
