NEW YORK, NEW YORK – I went to lunch at Nougatine, the more casual room in Jean-Goerges Vongerichten’s restaurant at Columbus Circle. I met a friend there in our ongoing quest to try every burger in New York. The burger was fabulous, except we felt that the pickles should have been served on the side. Here’s the view East on Central Park South as I’m walking to lunch, shot in infra red with my Leica M8.2 and a 35mm Summicron pre-Asp. lens – two frames stitched. The M8 sensor is sensitive to infrared light which results in “IR-polution” of images (a magenta cast) unless you use an IR-blockig filter in front of the lens. Here I’m using a filter that blocks everything except IR light.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – Vile weather continues. This is out my office window with my Leica and a 12mm Voigtlander lens in sinister light. This lens is wide. I mean really wide. If you hold the camera normally your knuckles are in the frame. No view finder is needed – just assume you get everything. You need to keep it level or vertical lines converge wildly – sort of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. (An aside. Through the miracle of You Tube and the public domain you can now see this film on line: Dr. Caligari, which has actually had an influence on my wide angle shooting.)
Shooting digitally the Voigtlander 12mm has issues with color casts, and there is a bit of distortion, but viewed objectively its a miracle that it forms an image at all. Overall my best work is done shooting wide, and this is the outer limit on wide.
On this day one year ago: My favorite shot of the Chrysler building. I’m having “One Photo Every Day” business cards made from this one. I’ve take the liberty of reproducing it large here.

NEW YORK, HEW YORK – An SUV that had the misfortune to be parked on the street during the three snowstorms that hit New York while we were away. The snow quickly passes from a beautiful white blanket hiding the City’s flaws to a dirty eyesore. Taken with my Leica.

MUSTIQUE – One last sky as we pack up to return to a snow and ice covered New York. Hasseblad H4D-60 and 28mm lens. Three frames stitched.
On this day one year ago: A lovely infrared image at Citicorp Center. Reviewing this image inspired me to dig out my infrared kit again. Expect some IR images over the next few weeks.

MUSTIQUE – We went on a picnic to Macaroni beach. Here’s an image taken with my Hasselblad H4D-60, followed by a sunset with the same camera. As you have seen from the previous post we were in exactly the same place for lunch on January 26, 2010.
