NEW YORK NEW YORK – Mary Karr read and sang at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre tonight – the performance was called “Kin”, the title of the CD of her songs written with Rodney Crowell. We showed up there with a bunch of publishing worthies and country and western royalty. A sensational evening. Shot with my Sony Nex-7 and Leica 35mm Summilux lens. (The blond woman by the way isn’t Mary Karr.)

BROOKLYN NEW YORK – My friend and Yale classmate Ted Shen held a reception at his house in Brooklyn Heights for photographer David Michalek. It was a brilliant afternoon (actually overcast – I’m referring to the people). I used the opportunity to walk 30 yards to the Esplanade and capture an images of the Wall Street skyline to use as a banner for my blog. All images taken with my Sony Nex-7 camera and a 35mm Leica Summilux lens.

WARREN CONNECTICUT – A perfect weekend. Here’s a view of the oak outside of our front door, and a snapshot of a picnic on our new old boat, and of the new old boat itself (a 1952 Chris Craft in amazingly good operating order – we got lucky on this one). I think of the second image as truly a moment to treasure. All taken with my Sony Nex-7.

I just received a camera that’s a bit of a curiosity. It’s called a Lytro. It incorporates highly innovative technology that lets you select a focus point after the image is taken, using Lytro’s proprietary software. This aspect of this device actually works and is amazing. But . . . the tiny viewing screen is useless in daylight (this is a point and guess camera) and the quality of the jpeg file output is poor. Here’s an example. Oh well . . .

WARREN CONNECTICUT – A weekend with friends and family. Maria is in Europe but our children and Kimball and Patrizia Chen joined us for the weekend. We just had a Big Green Egg delivered – known as the “Harley of outdoor cooking” so I’m experimenting with ribs, steaks, pork shoulder, pizza, you name it. This is deep water – I’ve got a fair amount of work to do on it.

Here’s John Novogrod listening to Alexander at dinner with us. Taken with my Leica M9 and Noctilux lens.

WARREN CONNECTICUT – I’ve given up trying to make my Noctilux work with my Sony Nex-7. Back to the drawing board – this time with my Leica M9.I spent an our making a minor adjustment to infinity focus on the M9 – it had gotten slightly out of whack. I expected the worse. I’ve been having trouble using the split image rangefinder because my right eye, my shooting eye, has gotten fairly astigmatic. So I switched to shooting with my left eye. Bottom line – focus is right on. I’m having no trouble focusing the lens on the M9 at f.95. Here are some samples:
