SALT LAKE CITY UTAH – I can hear the question now: “What are you doing in Salt Lake outside of ski season?” The simple answer is that I grew up here and I’ve returned this weekend for my high school reunion – an opportunity to connect with the girl (now a grandmother) who I had a hopeless crush on and with my friend Jerry Stephens, who I did my first photography with (it turns out that it was less important to him than it was to me), and generally to hang out with a bunch of older people who I haven’t seen for a very long time. See my biography link in the column to the right.

I flew to Salt Lake this morning; killed time for a couple of hours driving around photographing old neighborhoods; and then went to a picnic in Sugarhouse Park. The theme of the reunion is “Highland’s Greatest Year” – my senior year we won the state football championship. I shot the entire weekend with my Leica M9 and Noctilux lens, mostly with a .9 neutral density filter at f.95.

WARREN CONNECTICUT – A dislocated weekend. For today and tomorrow we’ve ceded our house to our daughter, Francesca, for a bachelorette party that she’s throwing for a friend. Dangerous territory. So we’re camping out for the weekend at Doug and Judy Hamilton’s house because they’re on the way to Salt Lake via the California Zephyr (a train!). I spent today photographing Doug and Judy’s house with my Alpa Max and Phase One IQ 180 back. Then the bachelorettes descended on us for cocktails, which I captured in the waining light with my M9 and a 1954 50 mm Dual-Range Summicron lens. Here you go:

FISHERS ISLAND NEW YORK – We drove to New London this morning and took the ferry to Fishers Island. We’re here for a reunion with three other couples who we’ve know since our early days in New York. All of us were bankers or lawyers (the banks we worked for, Bankers Trust, Salomon Brothers and Chase Manhattan, no longer exist) except for Maria, who as we know made her way in publishing. Our children are the same ages; we’ve been to each others christening and weddings. There’s a whole network of Godfather/Godmother relationships. Cocktails taken with my Fuji X-Pro1.

By the way I’m still shooting film with my Leica M3 and having a ball. I’ll post periodically as I develop and scan.

SARATOGA NEW YORK – We (the real we, not the editorial we) went to the track this afternoon with Alexander and Laura. Four adults. We bet on five races. A total of 20 bets, each of us taking a different horse for each race. We consulted tout sheets, horoscopes and fortune cookies and plumbed our color preferences. We didn’t have a single winning ticket. Not one.

At least I got some pictures. The track at Saratoga isn’t elegant (for that matter neither is Churchill Downs). The NY Racing Association depends on small bets from thousands of t-shirted bettors – who are here indeed in large numbers. Here are some punters on the rail captured with my Fuji X-Pro1 and 35mm lens.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I spent the late afternoon (after a more or less full day at my day job) preparing for a dinner party. Cooking well is a bit of a curse – people come to expect it. The menu was all cook-in-advnace summer stuff: vitello tonato, salade a la russe, an onion tart and a tossed salad. Anyway, here are images with my Fuji X Pro.

TODI ITALY – We spent the morning in Todi; had a fabulous lunch; went shopping in a factory outlet; connected with the wedding celebration in the late afternoon. First an image for Todi taken with my M9 and the 24mm Summilux; then a variety of images from the wedding taken with my Sony Nex-7 (which I use in situations where I expect poor light) and 35mm Summilux.

TODI ITALY – We’ve come here to celebrate the wedding of Kimball and Patrizia Chen’s son, Saverio, and Caitlan, Saverio’s new wife. Here’s a family shot from the run up dinner the night before (which is today, just to be clear). Taken with my Sony Nex-7 and 24mm Leica lens.
