NEW YORK NEW YORK – Have I told you about my other passion? You guessed “food”, right? We’re having house guests this weekend in Connecticut so I planned menus and did food shopping today. I’m a poor multi-tasker so today’s photograph is pretty undistinguished, derivative of myself, an egg crate building shot an an angle. Taken with my Fuji X Pro 1.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – A pedestrian day. Pedestrian in the sense that I walked a lot, not that it was commonplace. I walked from Grand Central to the ICP; attended my landscape class (in the printing lab so it was just ok); walked to Paragon to stock up for our forthcoming trip to Switzerland; had lunch at ABC Carpet. Altogether and excellent day. Here’s a chrome man statue that showed up in front of Paragon, taken with my Leica and a 35mm Summilux lens.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – We went to a reading and book signing at the Barnes & Noble on 86th Street by our old friend Joe Kanon. Joe is a novelist who has written a series of books set in various places but all set in 1944-46, a period of great transitions. His books have been set in Los Alamos, Venice, Berlin, Hollywood, and in the latest Istanbul. Here’s a picture of Joe taken with my Leica and 50mm Summilux.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – On the street with my Noctiflex on my Leica. Let me know when you get tired of out of focus backgrounds. At some point I’m going to need to move on.

Monday May 28, 2012 (Memorial Day)

NEW MILFORD CONNECTICUT – I’ve ragged on in the past about what a crap town this is. (For the uninitiated “crap town” is actually a term of art. Follow this link: crap towns.) I decided this Memorial Day to give the town a break and followed a road sign that said “9/11 Memorial”. It led me to a parking lot behind the train station where I found this. Captured with my Leica M9 and Dual Range Summicron, two frames stitched.

KENT CONNECTICUT – John Novogrod and I spent s few hours here hiking in Macedonia Brook State Park. I’ve written elsewhere on the differences between Eastern US landscape (here) and Western landscape (where I grew up). In the West the landscape is expansive. Long vistas are common with changing points of view as you move across the landscape. In the East sight lines are truncated by the heavy deciduous forests an the choppy topography. It’s like walking though a room. Mottled shadow/suniight presents a dramatic challenge to a photographer in terms of dynamic range. This bears an obvious relationship to work I’ve been shooting in my landscape class in Central Park in the Ramble and the North Woods, Here’s an image with my Leica M9 and a 1950s era lens, a Dual Range Summicron that I’ve had adapted to fit on the M9.

WARREN CONNECTICUT – A weekend with friends and family. Maria is in Europe but our children and Kimball and Patrizia Chen joined us for the weekend. We just had a Big Green Egg delivered – known as the “Harley of outdoor cooking” so I’m experimenting with ribs, steaks, pork shoulder, pizza, you name it. This is deep water – I’ve got a fair amount of work to do on it.

Here’s John Novogrod listening to Alexander at dinner with us. Taken with my Leica M9 and Noctilux lens.
