WARREN CONNECTICUT – I shot around the house today with my Sony A7Rii and 50mm Zeiss lens. We have a collection of plates put together from a lifetime of travel. Today’s plate was made by the Russian imperial china factory during early Soviet days and is a gorgeous example of Russian Constructivist design.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I spent the day shooting with my Sony A7rii and the very good (but large and heavy) native f1.4 50mm lens, translating to black and white in post. Technically the results are pretty satisfying. I’m going to have to do some more serious work on black and white translations.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I strapped my Leica 50mm f.95 Noctilux onto my Leica Monochrom camera today and went out to the Conservatory Garden in Central Park. The concept was to shoot it wide open with an neutral density filter, using live view to focus, rather than the rangefinder which isn’t that reliable at f.95. From a focus standpoint the results were fine, but I’m finding that I don’t really care for the swirly bokeh – the look of the out of focus portions of the image – that characterizes this lens. Judge for yourself.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I shot images that I don’t like today – one of the risks in pushing the envelope and experimenting. Here’s a brick wall torture test of my GoPro out our window.

WARREN CONNECTICUT – I’ve discussed before my struggles trying to render the Eastern deciduous landscape. Today I spent a few hours wandering through the woods with a camera, shooting handheld bracketed shots to turn into HDR images. I shot with my Sony a7rii. Interestingly the dynamic range of the Sony is sufficiently wide that the HDR’s offered little dynamic range advantage, and of course introduced some digital artifacts.
