Litchfield County CT and Charleston SC were at the opposite poles in the Civil War – Litchfield was the center of radical abolitionists and South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union and the site of the first battle in the war. Mother Emanuel AME Church was the site of a mass shooting in 2015.
