Looking back 16 years to looking up at the Ferarri dealership on Park Avenue. Shot in infrared. The dealership is still there, as is the AT&T building in the background. The AT&T Building is an elegant illustration of Parkinson’s Law of Buildings: perfection of a planned headquarters is achieved only by institutions on the point of collapse.
The building was designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee, completed in 1984. It’s widely considered the first major postmodern skyscraper, with its famous “Chippendale” broken pediment. AT&T’s chairman urged Johnson to make the new headquarters express the dignity of one of the most powerful corporations in the United States and to make it instantly recognizable as the company’s symbol. In January 1982, AT&T agreed to break up its local business into seven smaller regional operating companies. The building opened in 1984, the very same year the divestiture took effect on January 1st. The divestiture reduced AT&T’s book value by approximately 70%. Sic transit gloria mundi .
