MIILAN ITALY – What a day! I spent the better part of today at Milan’s Cimitero Monumentale, a large space filled with remarkable tombs – a recapitulation of the whole history of architecture. Wow. It La Recoleta (the famous cemetery in Buenos Aires) on steroids – built by first rate architects and artists. I’ve included a small selection of what I saw today, but a lot more than my ideal single image for a day.

Day 2084 of one photograph every day for the rest of my life.

MILAN ITALY – We spend a good part of the day today at a brand new museum here, the Fondazione Prada. The architecture is marvelous – I couldn’t begin to edit the images down to one. Like the new Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, it’s currently light on collection. Fondazione Prada solved this problem in part by putting up an exhibition of important Greek sculpture (and Roman copies) borrowed from all over Europe. We preferred the organic architecture here, which feels a bit like a Roman forum, to the grander, Frank Gehry, realization in Paris.

MILAN ITALY – We’re staying here with friends who own the Villa Rustici – a penthouse of a 1933 bauhaus-style monument. From an architectural guide to Milan:

In 1935, Giuseppe Terragni and Pietro Lingeri realize a building, Casa Rustici, which certainly represented a significant leap forward in terms of architectural solutions, but not only. Two buildings rise in parallel, united by catwalk balconies that create a virtual facade. We must not forget that we are talking about a building that is 75 years old . . . At the top level it is a space that is noted for its size – it covers the footprint of both buildings – and for the refinement of its details; it is often often called “villa”.

VILLEDIEU FRANCE – Our last morning here as we gear up for a long drive through the French Alps to Milan. A travel day (actually 7 hours of autobahn driving) so not a real good day for photography once we’ve left here.
