HILO, HAWAII – This town is the largest population center on the Big Island, and the rainiest city in America. Shot with my Leica Monochrom – in each case four frames stitched.

THE BIG ISLAND, HAWAII – It’s called the Big Island because its real name is Hawai’i, which is wildly confusing because it is also the name of the island chain and of the state. Shooting again with my GoPro, which is a lot of fun if you can cope with the really wide lens.

The Big Island, Hawaii – I’m stalling out here – too much beach and not enough action.

MAUI HAWAII – If you’ve been following these pages you know that my equipment choices generally run to the traditional. I reach first for my Leica Monochrom, a device that has it roots in the 1954 Leica M3. Of course I also own the current high resolution Sony (the A7r2) and use it in situations where speed or color are required.

I do experiment with the latest stuff – equipment that most people are using to capture images today. I’ve grown fairly adept with my iPhone – it’s gotten significantly more photo use since I found an app that lets me capture images in raw file format, which provides better image quality than the jpegs ordinarily produced by the phone. As you may know I’m working opportunistically and enthusiastically with a DJI Mavic drone.

Yesterday I broke down and bought a GoPro, the sports camera that operates in any environment. This thing is tiny and a great deal of fun. It shoots very wide with substantial fish eye distortion, distortion that can be corrected with a profile provided in Adobe Lightroom. Most people use it for its very good video; of course I’m shooting stills.

So here are some GoPro images shot today on a snorkeling trip.

HALEAKALA SUMMIT, MAUI – We made the long drive up here, through torrential rains, for sunset today. What a remarkable view. The observatories on the peak add to the moonscape quality of the landscape. Absolutely enchanting. Shot with my Leica Monochrom.

Day 2,849 of one photograph every day for the rest of my life. I’m still using an outdated copyright notice. Ugh.

On this day seven years ago (day 291): Trancoso Brasil. This is a different image than the one that I originally used.
