NEW YORK NEW YORK – This is a very busy time for me. Barely time to meet simple physical needs, let alone photograph. I did make it out to Fairway to buy groceries. Taken with m Ricoh GRD IV, my constant companion during this period. As you will see I don’t excel at “street”, even with the street shooter’s favorite camera in my hand.

Back to my self portrait series. I experimented with what I looked like at various resolutions. Here is one of the February 14, 1999 self portraits, shot on an 8×10 Arca Swiss. In this version I’ve reduced the resolution to four pixels by four pixels.

WASHINGTON CONNECTICUT – Perfect autumn day. I got to New Preston before the stores opened so I had an opportunity to capture some of the local building before cars showed up. Taken with my Alpa Max and 47mm Schneider lens. I used the shifts on the camera to correct perspective in the camera.

KENT CONNECTICUT – We visited our friend Greg, the owner of R T Facts, an antiques store in Kent that specializes in industrial and architectural stuff. We’ve been looking for a large fire pot for our terrace – these are now the vogue in these parts – you bundle up and light a roaring fire, extending the season for using the terrace a month or two. We found a large steel pot that was used in a steel mill in India. Here’s the inside shot with my Alpa TC and 35mm Schneider XL lens.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I have better days and worse days. This was one of the better. Sometimes it is enough just to go through your routine day with a camera in hand. It helps that it’s Spring. I met Francesca (our daughter) at J. McLaughlin where she was picking up a birthday present for her fiance, and for a coffee.

the way regular visitors (thanks to all of you) may notice that I’ve changed the galleries to the right. I’ve added a collection pulled together from the Litchfield County Connecticut churches that I’ve been exploring for the last 16 months, and a series of timed exposures taken out of the window of a high speed train in China. Let me know what you think.

These were taken with my Panasonic GH2 and the wonderful 14mm pancake lens

NEW YORK NEW YORK – We went for a walk to Union Square where we did some shopping in the farmer’s market for meals over the weekend. A pedestrian image, captured with my Alpa TC, which demonstrates once again that great gear doesn’t guarantee great images. This is in contrast to the image from one year ago.

On this day one year ago: Vietnam Memorial. For me the most emotional image since I started this project. I was in Vietnam in the Marine Corps. Of my Basic School class of 317 Second Lieutenants I know of no one who finished a 13 month tour of duty – almost everyone was killed, seriously wounded or sent home after their third Purple Heart. Karl Marlantes’s novel Matterhorn captures the experience brilliantly – I highly recommend it. Many friends of mine are listed on this wall. Visiting it is almost unbearable. I’ve reproduced the picture at full web size.

WARREN, CONNECTICUT – Warren’s “downtown” consists of the Rooster Tail Inn and four shops. One of the shops, Privet House, belongs to Richard Lambertson who has assembled a sensational collection of eclectic stuff. Travel and Leisure piece on downtown Warren. Anyway this is from Privet House’s substantial collection of things for dogs, Shot with my Leica M9 and my new 35mm Summicorn V. II.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – We’re planning a dinner party later in the week for which I’ll be cooking so I went to Agata and Valentina to sort out what’s fresh and seasonal. Maria had asked for scaloppine al limone so . . . we’re having scaloppine al limone. The rest of the menu is risotto with mushrooms (I found king oyster, mousseron, black trumpets, chanterelle and of course portobellos), baby zucchini, kale from out garden in Connecticut, and braised pumpkin, and an apricot tart with creme fraise. Here are some vegetables (mostly Treviso) in the market, taken with my Leica M9 and a 28mm Summicron lens.

Treviso

Interestingly, maybe ironically, on this date one year ago we gave a dinner party featuring . . . mushrooms. Last year it was the mushrooms that I brought back from a trip to the Willamette Valley in Oregon: Mushroom dinner.

I’m going to try a similar picture Thursday night hoping that it can be more interesting.
